Joep Dohmen De Antilliaanse politicus Jopie Abraham (67) krijgt van minister Plasterk (Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties, PvdA) geen inzage in zijn dossier bij de inlichtingendienst AIVD. Plasterk erkent in een brief aan de voormalig minister van de Nederlandse Antillen en oud-bestuurder van Bonaire dat de AIVD informatie over hem verzameld heeft. Maar Abraham mag die omwille van de „nationale veiligheid” niet zien. Toegang tot de eigen gegevens bij de AIVD is een wettelijk recht. Uitgezonderd zijn actuele gegevens en – onder meer – informatie over bronnen en werkwijze van de AIVD. Deze krant meldde in 2013 dat de AIVD jarenlang politici op Bonaire bespioneerd heeft. Uit de publicatie werd duidelijk dat tussen 2005 en 2010 Ramonsito Booi, partijleider van de christen-democratische UPB, en gedeputeerde Burney El Hage gevolgd zijn. Zij onderhandelden met het Nederlandse kabinet over aansluiting bij Nederland. Abraham, oud-partijleider van de Partido Demokrátiko Boneriano, wilde weten of de AIVD ook hem in de gaten gehouden heeft en vroeg zijn dossier op. Hij onderhandelde eveneens met Nederland. Sinds de opheffing van de Nederlandse Antillen in 2010 zijn Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius bijzondere Nederlandse gemeente. Het bespioneren van de Antilliaanse politici was een illegale operatie van de AIVD, verborgen gehouden voor het toenmalige Antilliaanse kabinet. De AIVD mocht op Antilliaans grondgebied alleen inlichtingen- en veiligheidsoperaties ontplooien indien hiervoor toestemming was verleend door de minister-president van de Antillen. Toenmalig premier Emily de Jongh-Elhage verklaarde tegenover NRC Handelsblad van niets te hebben geweten. Plasterk antwoordde in 2013 op Kamervragen van D66 en PvdA „niet in het openbaar” te kunnen reageren. De AIVD reageert zelf nooit op individuele zaken. Hoe kwam u erbij om uw dossier bij de AIVD op te vragen? „Ik had al langer een vreemd gevoel. Toen ik Statenlid was, verdwenen documenten uit mijn kantoor. Twee keer is er ingebroken. Ik vermoedde achtervolgd te worden. Twee jaar geleden bleek dat de AIVD onze politieke tegenstanders op Bonaire bespioneerd had. Later stelde mijn biograaf mij de vraag: ‘Zeg Jopie, ben jij niet ook in de gaten gehouden?’ ” Minister Plasterk heeft u, ook na bezwaar, laten weten dat u uw dossier niet mag inzien. Als argument noemt hij onder meer de staatsveiligheid. „In de periode dat de AIVD informatie over mij heeft verzameld, waren de Nederlandse Antillen een autonoom land. De toenmalige premier verklaarde dat de spionage onbekend was bij haar en haar diensten. Het was een illegale operatie. Dat heeft NRC ook in een onderzoek vastgesteld. Plasterk komt nu met oneigenlijke argumenten om de zaak in de doofpot te stoppen.” Welke argumenten? „Hij zegt bijvoorbeeld dat AIVD-bronnen gevaar lopen. Ik denk dat er voldoende mogelijkheden zijn om de documenten zo te bewerken dat de bronnen beschermd worden en ik wel zicht krijg op wat er over mij verzameld is.” Plasterk weigert ook uw klacht – dat de AIVD niet rechtmatig heeft gehandeld tegenover u – door te sturen naar de commissie die toezicht houdt op de AIVD. „De minister beroept zich op de procedure. Daarin staat dat een klacht niet in behandeling genomen hoeft te worden wanneer de gedragingen van de AIVD langer dan een jaar voor het indienen van de klacht hebben plaatsgevonden. Vreemd, want ik weet pas sinds 24 november 2014 dat de AIVD ook mij op de korrel had. Die dag liet Plasterk mij per brief weten dat er een dossier is. Dat Plasterk mijn klacht niet wil doorsturen, versterkt mijn argwaan. Ik zal daarom de commissie zelf een brief sturen.” Hoe ernstig is het? „Ik constateer
dat op Bonaire politici van alle partijen in de gaten zijn gehouden.
Dat gebeurde toen wij onderhandelden met Nederland over onze toekomstige
positie in het koninkrijk. Mijn somberste beeld is dat de AIVD
ook op andere eilanden politici onbevoegd heeft bespioneerd. Dat
moet maar eens duidelijk worden.” De oud-partijleider van de Partido Demokrátiko Boneriano, krijgt omwille van de ‘nationale veiligheid’ geen inzage in zijn AIVD-dossier.

And you wonder why we call him the False Prophet? After that stunning spiritual flop, Pope Francis then spoke about how much he wished to “enter into a dialogue” with the American people. This is where the rambling started, and the audience in attendance began to grow confused, not sure where to applaud or even if to applaud. At the 15:00 mark, he began to talk about out of control capitalism, and the evils of money. In an ironic twist. he left out the fact that the Vatican is the world’s richest corporation and has incalculable riches within it’s vaults. At the 24:00 mark,
he started promoting illegal immigration, and chastising America
for not letting more illegals in over our borders. He called it
a sin to not allow more illegals in, and that we should “reject
a mindset of hostility” towards them. What part of the word
“illegal” does the Pope not grasp? At this point he
invoked the “golden rule” and got the obligatory standing
ovation. It’s now the 30:00 mark, and I am still semi-patiently
waiting for the “vicar of Christ” to give Jesus a shout
out. The message the Pope sent is that the Catholic church has no desire to do one bit more than the law will force them to do. If I was a Catholic, at this point and for this reason alone, I would instantly abandon the wicked Vatican institution known as the Catholic church. Shameful and disgusting. Francis talks incessantly about “healing the world”, and he won’t even help to heal the victims that his own church created. Spoken like the lying, hypocritical False Prophet that he is. At the 51:00 mark, Francis again invoked the memories of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. in an ongoing bid to call America to social justice. Still no references to God, Jesus Christ or to the Holy Spirit. The 4 Iranian hostages with one of them being a Christian pastor? Not a word. I guess they don’t count. He then closed his “sermon” by saying “God bless America”. Finally, the “vicar of Christ” mentioned God. Ugh.

Volgens de Venezolaan staat Curaçao in zijn land bekend als een goede markt voor wapenverkoop. Zelf had hij twee wapens binnengesmokkeld en daar 400 dollar mee verdiend. De rechter veroordeelde hem tot 15 maanden gevangenisstraf.

She said that although progress had been made to improve animal welfare, ultimately people needed to give up meat or dairy if they really wanted to protect animals. September 29 at 05:12am Gary McKinnon: The hacker who exposed NASA's secret kept 'UFO Files' Between February 2001 and March 2002 Gary McKinnon from North London, looking for evidence of free energy suppression and a cover-up of UFO activity and other technologies potentially useful to the public, hacked into 16 NASA computers as well as dozens of US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Department of Defense computers. The search for evidence of a UFO cover-up, however, landed McKinnon in trouble. The Americans believed he had caused $800,000 (£487,000) worth of damage to computers between 2001 and 2002. On 16 October 2012, after a series of legal proceedings in Britain, Home Secretary Theresa May withdrew her extradition order to have him brought to the United States. She took the quasi-judicial decision on human rights grounds because of medical reports warning that McKinnon, who has Asperger syndrome and suffers from depressive illness, could kill himself if sent to stand trial in the US. On 14 December 2012, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, announced that McKinnon would not be prosecuted in the United Kingdom because of the difficulties involved in bringing a case against him when the evidence was in the United States. McKinnon is accused of committing the ‘biggest military computer hack of all time’, and if he had been convicted in US, could have faced up to 70 years in prison and up to $2 million in fines. But what did McKinnon find? McKinnon had heard that information about the existence of extraterrestrial visits was being hidden from the public, and that pictures from space were being altered at NASA’s Johnson’s space center; UFOs were allegedly being taken out of pictures. When he hacked into Johnson’s systems, he found a high definition picture of a large cigar-shaped object hovering over the northern hemisphere. When he hacked into the systems of US Space Command, he found a log that listed non-terrestrial officers… which he believed was evidence that the US military has a secret battalion in space. Some of these logs were ship-to-ship transfers; the USSS LeMay and the USSS Hillenkoetter were the names he saw on the transfer logs – USSS stands for United States Space Ship. He said, “I found a list of officers’ names … under the heading ‘Non-Terrestrial Officers’. It doesn’t mean little green men. What I think it means is not Earth-based. I found a list of ‘fleet-to-fleet transfers’, and a list of ship names. I looked them up. They weren’t US Navy ships. What I saw made me believe they have some kind of spaceship, off-planet”. The US government, indifferent to the information McKinnon came across, continues to allege that he took down military computers, making the US vulnerable to attack soon after 9/11. McKinnon denies those claims, and says he had never acted with malicious intent. In 2009, he told the BBC, “I am not blind to criminality, but I was on a moral crusade. I was convinced, and there was good evidence to show, that certain secretive parts of the American government intelligence agencies did have access to crashed extra-terrestrial technology which could, in these days, save us in the form of a free, clean, pollution-free energy. I thought if someone is holding onto that, it is unconstitutional under American law. I didn’t think about jail sentences at the time”. Is McKinnon being made a scapegoat? In 2005, McKinnon told the Guardian, “Once you’re on the network, you can do a command called NetStat – Network Status – and it lists all the connections to that machine. There were hackers from Denmark, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Thailand… every night for the entire five to seven years I was doing this”. It’s days like this that make you proud to be human. Using the power of the patient's mind, scientists have enabled a man completely paralyzed in both legs to walk again. And this astonishing feat didn’t involve the help of an exoskeleton or robotic limbs, and no brain implants were required, making this a first for rehabilitation. The patient was a 26-year-old man who had no motor (movement) function in his lower limbs due to a spinal cord injury sustained five years ago. He also lost sensation below his injury, although he could just about feel when his bladder was full. Describing the results in the Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation, the team’s goal was to allow him to regain voluntary control of his legs using his brain, but without the need for invasive brain surgery. To achieve this, the researchers created a brain-computer interface system using an electroencephalogram (EEG) cap to read patterns of brain activity while he thought about walking. Next, he underwent training to learn how to acquire brain control of an avatar’s walking within a virtual reality environment. Once he achieved this, he then had to build up strength in his leg muscles that had deteriorated through a lack of use, which involved electrical stimulation combined with weight shifting maneuvers. After his muscles were reconditioned enough to stand, it was time for the really hard work to begin. Instead of going for gold straight away, the team first got him to practice walking movements while he was suspended a few centimeters off the ground. As he thought about walking, his brain signals (read by the EEG cap) bypassed his damaged spinal cord and were pinged to electrodes that had been positioned around his knees, providing muscular stimulation. Nineteen sessions later, the man had improved so much that he was ready to put his feet to the ground. Wearing a system that supported his weight and helped prevent falls, he was able to successfully translate what he had learned and walked unsuspended. Over time, his control improved and he was able to walk several meters. An undeniably incredible feat, but whether or not such a system could ultimately offer benefits to the wider population will rest on future trials involving more people. Obviously everyone is different, as are their injuries, but it is hoped that this technology could benefit many people. However, it might not be suitable in some circumstances. “It can be speculated that a very severe traumatic brain injury in tandem with a spinal cord injury could prevent this brain-computer interface system from working,” An Do, one of the study’s lead researchers, told IFLScience. There is also, as always,
room for improvement, with the technology requiring tweaking and
streamlining, which Do predicts will take a significant amount
of time. Do also said that the team is working towards developing
a simplified version as well as a system that would involve a
brain implant, which could potentially offer improved control.

AIVD: geen signalen voor golf van IS-strijders in Nederland Inlichtingendienst AIVD heeft geen signalen dat Islamitische Staat (IS) of andere jihadistische groeperingen structureel proberen handlangers via asielroutes naar Europa te sturen. Dat zegt een woordvoerder van de geheime dienst. De afgelopen weken is herhaaldelijk gewaarschuwd - van Geert Wilders tot de paus - voor de intocht van IS-strijders als gevolg van de vluchtelingenstroom. Ook de NCTV, die de terrorismebestrijding in Nederland coördineert, herkent deze ontwikkeling niet. Nationaal Coördinator Dick Schoof: 'Er is momenteel geen informatie die erop duidt dat zich in de migratiestromen vanuit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika grote aantallen jihadisten bevinden die opzettelijk naar Europa worden gestuurd.' PVV-leider Wilders zei vorige week tijdens de Algemene Politieke Beschouwingen dat 'IS tussen al die asielzoekers duizenden terroristen naar Europa smokkelt'. Wilders baseerde zijn uitspraak onder anderen op de Libanese minister van Onderwijs Elias Bou Saab. Volgens persbureaus schatte hij dat 2 procent - 1 op de 50 - vluchtelingen 'geradicaliseerd' is. Dat leidde Bou Saab af uit ervaringen met Syrische vluchtelingen in opvangkampen in Libanon: 'We zien het ook in onze kampen: 2 tot 3 procent is radicaal.' Wilders vertaalde dat
naar de stelling dat '2 op de 100 vluchtelingen een IS-strijder
is'. IS zou ook claimen dat het '4.000 strijders' Europa heeft
binnengesmokkeld. De uitspraken over die aantallen zijn echter
gedaan door anonieme smokkelaars en de berichten zijn lastig te
verifiëren. Op een bijeenkomst van de JOVD, de jongerenafdeling van de VVD, uitte Bram Moszkowicz van de partij Voor Nederland deze week in Leiden zijn angst voor 'onthoofdingen' als gevolg van de 'vluchtelingenstroom'. De ex-advocaat zei onder meer: 'Ik ben echt bang dat er tussen die mensen lieden zitten die het normaal vinden om mensen te onthoofden.' En: 'Ze gunnen ons het leven niet.' De Nederlandse inlichtingendiensten herkennen deze toestroom van IS-strijders via vluchtelingenroutes niet. Wel zeggen ze dat het in 'individuele gevallen' mogelijk blijft dat de asielstroom wordt gebruikt door 'personen met plannen voor een terroristische aanslag'. Bibi van Ginkel, terrorisme-expert van Clingendael, noemt de aannames van politici over de instroom van duizenden IS-strijders 'absurd'. Van Ginkel: 'Ik snap echt niet waarom je dat zou zeggen. Dan gooi je een heleboel dingen op een hoop. Dat is enkel interessant uit politieke overwegingen; om angst te creëren.' Volgens Van Ginkel
kiezen terroristen over het algemeen de weg van de minste weerstand.
'Dat is dit niet.' De toestroom van vluchtelingen veroorzaakt
wel andere moeilijkheden, zegt ze. 'De screening door Nederlandse
diensten bijvoorbeeld. De hooiberg is erg groot, daar zit de zwakke
plek.' Inlichtingendiensten zouden de Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst
(IND) beter kunnen bijstaan in het doorlichten van personen. 'En
we moeten erover nadenken de deur niet te wijd open te zetten.'
De IND heeft vorig jaar enkele Syrische vluchtelingen bestempeld
als mogelijke oorlogsmisdadigers. De claims van IS over
binnengesmokkelde strijders zijn opzettelijke misleiding In Denemarken belegde Finn Borch Andersen, hoofd van de veiligheidsdienst PET, deze week een persconferentie om uit te leggen dat er geen informatie is over groepen IS-strijders onder vluchtelingen. Afgelopen maand kwamen meer dan 12 duizend vluchtelingen naar Denemarken. Volgens Andersen zijn de asielroutes te riskant voor mogelijke terroristen omdat de kans op ontdekking groot is. Politiediensten in diverse landen houden de routes in de gaten. Hij noemde de claims van IS over binnengesmokkelde strijders 'opzettelijke misleiding'. De Duitse binnenlandse veiligheidsdienst BfV waarschuwde woensdag wel voor rekrutering van jonge vluchtelingen voor de 'jihad in Irak en Syrië'. Volgens het hoofd van de dienst, Hans-Georg Maassen, worden ze onder het mom van 'humanitaire hulp' misleid. In Nederland doet dit
fenomeen zich nog niet zichtbaar voor, aldus Schoof.

The new distance record was set using advanced single-photon detectors made of superconducting wires of molybdenum silicide that were about 150 nanometers (or billionths of a meter) wide and cooled to about minus 457 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 272 degrees Celsius), or about 1 degree above absolute zero. The experiment involved a near-infrared wavelength commonly used in telecommunications, the researchers said.
The detectors used in this new experiment could record more than 80 percent of arriving photons, according to the scientists. In comparison, the previous record-holder had detectors that operated with about 75 percent efficiency at best. Moreover, the new experiment detected 10 times fewer stray photons than the previous record-holder. Prior research did achieve quantum teleportation over longer distances over open air — a span of 89 miles (144 kilometers) between the two Canary Islands of La Palma and Tenerife, located off the northwest coast of Africa. "However, the experiment at the Canary Islands involved a telescope on top of one mountain and a telescope on top of another mountain, with the telescopes pointed at each other at night, since background light during the day would interfere with the experiment," Stevens said. "If you wanted quantum teleportation in the real world — say, from one city to another — you might not necessarily have a direct line-of-sight between two locations, and you wouldn't want to be limited to working at night, so fiber optics might be more feasible." Quantum teleportation could enable the development of a "quantum Internet" that allows messages to be sent more securely, Stevens said. Als je kijkt in Wikipedia bij de allereerste koning van Oranje, Willem I, dan zie je het volgende: Op 16 maart 1815 riep hij zichzelf uit tot koning der Verenigde Nederlanden en hertog van Luxemburg, waarna hij op 21 september 1815 in Brussel werd ingehuldigd als Koning Willem I. Niets en zeker niet zoiets, gebeurt zomaar en er zal in de achtergrond gerust het nodige gekonkel hebben plaatsgevonden om deze Oranje op de Nederlandse troon te krijgen. Inmiddels is ook steeds duidelijker dat helemaal niets gebeurt zonder goedkeuring van de geheime genootschappen die door Rome (de Jezuïeten/het Vaticaan of soms een combinatie van beiden) worden gecontroleerd. Dat de kroning van Willem I met goedkeuring en instemming van Rome tot stand kwam, blijkt ook uit het volgende: De Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw is een van de oudste en hoogste Nederlandse civiele orden en werd op 29 september 1815 door koning Willem I ingesteld. Het is dan ook absoluut geen toeval dat deze orde in het leven werd geroepen in hetzelfde jaar dat Willem I op de troon kwam. Het wapen bestaat grotendeels uit het Maltezer Kruis, een symbool dat we ook tegenkomen bij beroemde ordes zoals de Knights of Malta (met soms onverwachte leden). De eed voor de ridders van de Knights of Malta is weer gebaseerd op de vreselijke eed van de Jezuïeten en zo zie je weer een verband met de geheime ordes van Rome. Waar het dus alle schijn van heeft, is dat Willem I werd gekroond tot koning van Nederland in opdracht van Rome. Als blijk van zijn trouw en onderdanigheid aan datzelfde Rome richt deze kersverse koning in hetzelfde jaar dat hij de troon bestijgt een orde op die ook onder controle van Rome staat. Dit wordt uiteraard niet publiekelijk bekendgemaakt, maar zoals te doen gebruikelijk verraad de symboliek eigenlijk alles. Via deze Nederlandse orde komen we dan weer uit bij CERN waar de afgelopen week een nieuwe voorzitter is gekozen. In Genève is de Nederlandse hoogleraar experimentele natuurkunde Sijbrand de Jong unaniem gekozen tot de nieuwe voorzitter van de Raad van CERN, het Europees onderzoeksinstituut voor deeltjesfysica. De Raad is het hoogste orgaan binnen CERN en bestaat uit afgevaardigden van de 21 lidstaten. Dat is natuurlijk heel mooi en als je dan kijkt bij de Wikipediapagina van Sijbrand de Jong: Ter gelegenheid van de Nederlandse Koningsdag in april 2015 werd hij benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Een bekende naamgenoot en al dan niet familie van Sijbrand was kardinaal Johannes de Jong. Binnen de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw was kardinaal De Jong die in 1955 is overleden, een belangrijk iemand: Kardinaal De Jong was Ridder Grootkruis in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw; deze hoogste civiele Nederlandse onderscheiding viel behalve aan zijn opvolger kardinaal Alfrink sindsdien vrijwel uitsluitend toe aan leden van de koninklijke familie, staatshoofden, Willem Drees, Kofi Annan, Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, Ruud Lubbers en Joseph Luns. Dit is het wapen van kardinaal Johannes de Jong: Een wapen dat vrijwel identiek is aan het wapen van de huidige Jezuïetenpaus Franciscus uit de tijd dat hij nog kardinaal was. De vreemdsoortige UFO-hoed die in beide wapens voorkomt, is een voorstelling van een zogenaamde Saturnushoed. Een bekend occult satanisch symbool. Via de Jezuïetenpaus Franciscus die als kardinaal Bergoglia heette, komen we weer terecht bij een andere drager van het grootkruis van de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw: Ter gelegenheid van haar huwelijk met Zijne Koninklijke Hoogheid Prins Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, Prins van Oranje, Prins der Nederlanden, Prins van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkheer van Amsberg is met ingang van het tijdstip van de voltrekking van het huwelijk Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid Prinses Máxima der Nederlanden, Prinses van Oranje-Nassau, mevrouw van Amsberg benoemd tot Ridder Grootkruis in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Maxima is een zeer goede bekende van Jorge Bergoglio alias Franciscus want zoals wij in een eerder artikel schreven: Maxima heeft voor haar verloving Bergoglio omgekocht met een half miljoen Euro om haar geboorte en doopakte te veranderen zodat ze met Willem-Alexander kon trouwen. Blijkbaar waren deze documenten illegaal en moest haar identiteit gewijzigd worden. De nauwe banden tussen het Nederlandse K-huis, de huidige paus en het criminele syndicaat Ndrangheta worden verder blootgelegd. Deze maand wordt de intensiviteit van de experimenten bij CERN verder opgevoerd, waardoor wellicht portalen kunnen ontstaan naar andere dimensies zoals wij al eerder schreven: Echter sinds de opwaardering van CERN hebben sommige mensen het zweet op hun hoofd staan. Die affiniteit, die verbinding, zo lijkt het, hebben veel volwassenen verloren. We spreken over mens en natuur. Dat is een misvatting die al vanaf de klassieke oudheid een belangrijke rol speelt in het westerse wereldbeeld en nog eens versterkt werd in de 17de eeuw door de school van Descartes, die een strikte scheiding maakte tussen lichaam en geest. Descartes en zijn navolgers gingen ervan uit dat de mens het enige wezen is dat een onstoffelijke geest in zich herbergt. Voor hen waren dieren machines, een soort marionetten. Inmiddels weten we wel beter. De wetenschap heeft aangetoond dat veel dieren een zekere vorm van zelfbewustzijn kennen en de inspirerende studies van Frans de Waal laten zien dat chimpansees en bonobo's empathisch gedrag vertonen. Lawaai Economische en politieke beslissingen zijn altijd verbonden met een innerlijke houding ten opzichte van het leven - een wereldbeeld. Kunnen we overschakelen van een wereldbeeld dat de mens centraal stelt, naar een wereldbeeld dat het welzijn van al het leven in beschouwing neemt? Hier ligt een persoonlijke uitdaging, die geen regering, geen politieke partij of instelling voor ieder van ons kan invullen. Echte verandering groeit haast altijd zoals een plant: vanuit de wortelzone naar boven. Begrijpelijkerwijs zal de politiek geen voorstander zijn van verandering als de wortels van de maatschappij niet aangeven dat te willen. En dan zijn er de verschillen in ¬belangen en de vaak conflicterende priori¬teiten, die vertragend werken. In het bedrijfsleven is intussen wel van alles gaande; er is een groeiend bewustzijn van de noodzaak te investeren in sociale verandering en duurzaamheid. Ik hoor om mij heen in de zakenwereld uitspraken zoals: 'Het gaat er niet meer om óf we veranderen, de vraag is nu hoe doen we dat'. Technische oplossingen zijn nodig en er zijn wereldwijd prachtige methoden aan het ontstaan om minder vervuilend te werk te gaan en zuiniger te worden in energieverbruik. Ik zou dit de 'buitenkant' van duurzaamheid' willen noemen. Er is ook verandering op een diepgaander niveau nodig. Als we praten over duurzaamheid, doen we dat dan vanuit een wereldbeeld dat uitgaat van een scheiding tussen mens en natuur of vanuit een wereldbeeld bewust van de wederzijdse relaties tussen al wat leeft, waarbij we deze begrijpen en aanvoelen en ook van daaruit willen handelen? Ik spreek in deze context graag over de 'binnenkant van duurzaamheid'. Is het niet interessant dat op het terrein van duurzame ontwikkeling en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen een scheiding is gemaakt tussen 'people, profit and planet'? Zou het niet volstaan te zeggen: 'planet', omdat dat begrip alle aspecten van duurzaamheid insluit? Waar slaat 'profit' op: opbrengst en winst voor de onderneming, voor de mensheid, of voor het welzijn van al wat leeft? Welzijn voor al wat
leeft Het werk van de Duitse filosoof Martin Buber is gebaseerd op het onderscheid dat wij maken in onze kijk op de wereld: we kunnen de ander en het andere zien als 'het' of als 'Gij'. Zien we de ander als een 'het', dan handelen we vanuit een wereldbeeld van afgescheidenheid. Daarmee isoleren we onszelf en sluiten we ook een deel van onze innerlijke natuur af. Wanneer we ons wezenlijk verbonden voelen met onze omgeving, zien we de ander en het andere als een 'Gij'. Buber speekt in deze context over wederkerigheid. En in deze wederkerigheid maken we ook een diepe verbinding met ons eigen innerlijk. Mensen die geïsoleerd in de bergen leven, zeggen vaak dat het alleen leven in de natuur het innerlijk zuivert door de ruimte die er is voor reflectie, door de stilte die spreekt. Zij vinden dat dit een pad is naar hun natuurlijke zelf, naar hun diepste innerlijk. Daarin voelen ze zich verbonden met al dat is. De wijze Zuid-Afrikaanse Zulu-professor Koka zei eens: 'Ik ben omdat de natuur is en omdat zij is ben ik'. Daarmee beschouwt hij de natuur als een 'Gij'. De Japanse Zenmeester D. T. Suzuki schrijft in zijn essay 'Zen Buddhism and Psychoanalysis' dat welzijn neerkomt op het gevoelsmatig volledig verbonden zijn met mens en natuur, het overstijgen van afgescheidenheid en vervreemding, en het komen tot de ervaring van 'een-zijn' met alles wat bestaat en leeft - en tegelijkertijd toch jezelf te ervaren als een aparte entiteit. 'Welzijn', zo gaat hij verder, 'betekent volledig geboren zijn, om te worden wie je in potentie bent. Dit houdt in dat je openstaat voor de ervaring van vreugde en verdriet, of, in andere woorden, dat je ontwaakt uit de halfslaap waarin de mens gewoonlijk leeft, om volledig wakker te zijn. Welzijn betekent, uiteindelijk: je ego afleggen, afstand te doen van hebzucht en begeerte, en het eigen zelf ervaren in dit zijn.' Mooi pad Als we bedenken dat
de mens deel is van de fundamentele natuur van het universum,
zoals het taoïsme zo mooi verwoordt, dan bevinden we ons
op het pad van 'inter-zijn', en van het 'Gij'. Wanneer wij dit
begrijpen, en dit doorvoelen, dan kunnen wij handelen vanuit precies
dat startpunt. Dan zullen we handelen en voelen als zijnde een
deel van het grotere geheel, met respect voor het totale ecosysteem
aarde. Onze beslissingen zullen dan in harmonie zijn met de natuur,
gebaseerd op het wereldbeeld van gemeenschappelijkheid van al
het leven. Dan handelen we als deelgenoten van het systeem aarde. Het is heel interessant dat de encycliek Laudato si' van Paus Franciscus handelt over de noodzaak onze manier van denken te veranderen en dat hij het concept van de men¬selijke overheersing over de aarde uitdaagt, waarmee hij het eeuwenoude beeld dat de mens eigenaar van de natuur is doorbreekt. Wat wordt van ons in deze tijd gevraagd? We moeten ons realiseren en ook accepteren dat aanzienlijk meer dan economische groei nodig is voor het welzijn van de mensheid. Ecologie en economie verwijzen beide naar een en hetzelfde begrip: 'oikos', het huis, het thuis, de familie. In de praktijk betekent dit: dat we economie en ecologie met elkaar kunnen en moeten verbinden. Door de definitie van economie niet langer strikt te beperken tot 'profit', tot winst, maar die ruimer op te vatten als een fundament voor het welzijn van al het leven, onderhouden we werkelijk een thuis, een familie. Economie gaat dan deel uitmaken van de ecologie van de grote gemeenschap van alle levensvormen. En dat is waarom de zakenwereld zo'n cruciale rol speelt op dit moment van transformatie. Persoonlijk leiderschap Ik denk hier aan Marcus Aurelius die eeuwen geleden zei: 'Vergeet niet dat het universum één levend organisme is met één enkele bron en één enkele ziel'. Op het moment dat je begrijpt dat jij er zelf toe doet, dat jij ertoe doet in wat je denkt en in hoe je handelt, in wat voor keuzes je maakt, in hoe je omgaat met je relaties, in hoe je jezelf behandelt, op het moment dat je begrijpt dat ieder van ons is als een druppel water in de oceaan van het leven, dan begrijp je dat het ¬ieders persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid is een heldere druppel te zijn die zal bijdragen aan de helderheid van de oceaan als geheel. Want in feite is het 'ik' ook altijd een 'wij'. Ik zie dit als een vreugdevolle verantwoordelijkheid, omdat dit het leven en alles wat ieder mens doet de moeite waard maakt. En zo creëren we samen de toekomst. Dat betekent niet dat de verandering van een antropocentrisch wereldbeeld naar een wereldbeeld van harmonieuze saamhorigheid van al wat leeft gemakkelijk is. Het is een wezenlijke verandering van mentaliteit en houding ten opzichte van het leven en de eigen rol daarin. We zouden onszelf moeten toestaan hier samen met zijn allen naar toe te groeien. Kleine individuele beslissingen zijn steeds weer aanknopingspunten. Want vergeet niet, bedrijven zullen sneller ecologisch verantwoord gaan produceren als wij als consument daarom vragen. Die verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij ieder van ons. We leven in een fascinerend moment in de geschiedenis, een tijdperk dat ons uitdaagt nieuwe technische maar ook spirituele wegen te ontdekken, om te komen tot een levensstijl die in harmonie is met de natuur en onze innerlijke natuur. In mijn denken is het wel¬bewust aangaan van een inter-relatie met al het leven uiteindelijk de vervulling van ons menselijk potentieel. Dan zijn we in harmonie met de 'primordial essence' - het wezen der dingen - of het leven zelf. We kunnen dit gezamenlijk doen. De gedachten en handelingen van elke persoon tellen mee. Naties, gemeenschappen en ieder van ons kan een leider zijn en een voorbeeld op dit pad van inter-zijn, een pad van harmonie met moeder en zuster aarde. Het pad dat als uitgangspunt heeft: 'Ik ben omdat de natuur is en omdat zij is ben ik'.

A YouGov poll found that 78% of U.S. citizens are in favor of requiring random drug testing for members of Congress. A full 62% said they “strongly” favor this, compared with only 51% who feel the same way about food stamp and welfare recipients. The support for this move was bipartisan, as 86% percent of Republicans, 77% of Democrats and 75% of independents support the mandatory drug tests for members of Congress. It would seem that more than Americans are worried about drugs, they are upset with the hypocrisy of U.S. lawmakers, who carry on this charade of a “War on Drugs” while using the very things they pass laws against. A cargo ship which has been linked to anti-drug Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was stopped and searched before departing from Colombia recently, with approximately 90 pounds of cocaine found on board by the Coast Guard. But now, Senator McConnell is doubling down on his reputation as an “Anti-Drug Senator” by railing against legalized marijuana. The Senate Minority Leader said that he is firmly “against legalizing marijuana,” even while this has put him at odds with his Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes. McConnell acknowledged that marijuana is “not in the same category as heroin,” even if it is treated as such by the DEA. Still, he said that legalizing the plant could “completely transform your society in a way that I think certainly most Kentuckians would not agree with.” “I don’t think an answer to this, honestly, is to go in a direction of legalizing any of these currently illegal drugs,” McConnell explained. “This whole movement in various parts of the country is a big mistake.” This is rather ironic, as back in November that drugs found on the ship, the Ping May, were carried by the vessel operated by the Foremost Maritime Corporation. That’s a company owned by Mitch McConnell’s in-laws, the Chao family. Free Thought explained that “this connection is not only relevant because of the family connection, but also because the Chao family has often made large donations to McConnell’s campaigns.” “In fact,” they continue, “the Chao family has been funding McConnell since the late 1980s. Years later, in 1993, McConnell married Elaine Chao and secured the Chao family as one of his primary sources for investments.” A gift worth somewhere between 5 and 25 million dollars from the Chao Family made McConnel one of the richest senators in the country in 2008. The Foremost Maritime Corporation is currently operating 16 dry bulk cargo ships, most of which are currently still in service. What makes this case even more interesting is that McConnell is well known as a staunch prohibitionist. In 1996, McConnell sponsored “The Enhanced Marijuana Penalties Act”, a bill designed to increase the mandatory minimum sentencing for people caught with marijuana. Luis Gonzales, an official with the Colombian Coast Guard in Santa Marta told The Nation that the Ping May’s crew were questioned as part of the investigation, but that they have yet to file any charges in the case. September 22 at 05:01am Don't Want Cancer? Sweat It Off Cancer sucks. No, wait: cancer REALLY sucks. Most of us perceive cancer as a gruesome condition that slowly degrades health and dignity. Though enormous advances in cancer therapy have been made in the last 30 years, the best option remains: just don’t get it. Cancer can be difficult to conceptualize: many common forms (in first-world countries, save lung cancer and cervical cancer) have no clear pathogen. To add confusion, the ones that do, like lung cancer, can still affect non-smokers who make it a point to avoid second-hand smoke. Since you can't really be "exposed" to most cancer, how do you prevent it? (or at least use tools within your control to reduce risk) A few months ago Jordan Rapp asked me to pen an article or two. I've always had a pet interest in exercise physiology, though my training as a scientific apprentice (sounds a lot nicer than "PhD Candidate") is centered on cancer research. So when I was asked to combine the two I started mining the scientific literature. And this is what I found: 1) People who do aerobic
exercise tend to develop less cancer than sedentary individuals In 2009 a group in Great Britain published a meta-analysis of 40 case-controlled studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals (http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v100/n4/abs/6604917a.html) on exercise and cancer. When comparing the most active to the most sedentary individuals across studies, the authors found a 24% overall risk reduction for colon cancer - one of the most common cancer types! Of particular interest was a study in 2009 that followed 2,560 men from eastern Finland and required them to record their daily activities and diet for 17 years! (http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2009/07/28/bjsm.2008.056713.abstract) The authors discovered a "dose dependent effect" whereby greater amounts of exercise associated with a greater risk reduction to dying of cancer. The minimum exercise required to yield a significant reduction? 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily. I would like to point out that the aforementioned reports are correlation studies. They indicate that people who have at least 4-6 hours of aerobic exercise per week develop less cancer than their couch potato buddies. Exercise could inhibit cancer development, or some other factor (genetic or environmental) could influence both one’s propensity to exercise as well as other habits that might prevent cancer. Why does this matter? Unless there is a mechanism linking the two and establishing causation, exercising more would NOT lessen one's risk for developing cancer. Just because the average ocean temperature and the number of pirate attacks worldwide have both increased in the last 30 years does not mean that the pirates are causing the oceans to warm, and it does not mean that fighting piracy is the same as fighting global warming. So, a correlation has no teeth without causation. If exercise does prevent cancer, there must be a mechanism. I've seen several theories suggesting that exercise modulates cancer development by lowering hormone levels that promote gender-specific cancers (men: testosterone + prostate cancer, women: estrogen + breast cancer). But, that does not account for correlations of decreased risk of gender-neutral cancers like colon cancer (http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v100/n4/abs/6604917a.html). In each body cell (minus red blood cells) our DNA is housed in structures called chromosomes. On the molecular scale, chromosomes look a bit like short pieces of rope that are capped on each end like a dog's chew toy. Those caps are called telomeres, and they tend to get shorter as we age. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21270748) Once they get short enough the rope begins to fray and tangle with other unraveling chromosomes (pieces of DNA), causing random recombination and genetic chaos inside a cell. Many cancers also show evidence of these events, and cancer can be induced in the lab by artificially stimulating these events. So, it has been proposed that cancer development and aging are intrinsically linked. Correlation studies echo this a thousand times over, as I have stressed time and time again in my cancer Q&A blog: Cancer is an age-related disease! In many scientific circles the telomere length of white blood cells is used as a molecular measure of age (as opposed to a time-based measure of age). It's very interesting that active people tend to lose telomeres more slowly than sedentary individuals. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21102320). Taken literally, endurance athletes age more slowly than the rest of humanity. But could this be due to some gene affecting telomere length and propensity to exercise? In a study in 2008, a group of scientists at King's College in London investigated the telomeres of genetically identical twins that were NOT identical in their athletic habits. What really intrigued me is that the athletic twins consistently had longer telomeres than their sedentary siblings! Clearly, the observed difference cannot be genetic in origin. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18227361) It has been anecdotally said by many that sport is the fountain of youth. On a molecular scale, it might actually be so! Chronologically, identical twins Adam and Brian might both be 30. On the inside, Adam's running habit might keep him younger than Brian's couch habit. It's well established that aerobic exercise greatly reduces one's risk for cardiovascular disease. (http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/107/1/e2.full). Aerobic exercise also appears to have a cancer-suppressing effect as well. The vast majority of Americans will either die of cardiovascular disease or cancer in their lifetimes. Knowing this, it is essential that we bring this preventive therapy to our friends and family that have yet to embrace it. In a purely monetary equation, many groups have postulated that it would be MUCH less expensive to prevent chronic diseases like cancer than to treat it. As a society, would it not make sense to allocate our resources toward measures that promote athletic habits? But I digress… Before I sign off, I'd like to stress that outdoor endurance athletes ARE at greater risk of skin cancers, so keep that sunscreen close! And no, sunscreen does not actually promote cancer development; that's all a big scare based on shaky data and internet fear mongerers who don't actually read scientific literature or understand statistics (http://ryongraf.com/ask-a-scientist-cancer-for-dummies-public-education-blog/can-sunscreen-cause-cancer/). In case it needed any re-iterating, an experimental study in Australia published in January 2011 determined that UV-A protecting sunscreen DOES significantly reduce risk for the nastiest of skin cancers: melanoma (http://ryongraf.com/2011/07/not-taking-it-for-granted-sunscreen-does-prevent-melanoma/). So there you have it: aerobic exercise prevents cancer. And by "prevent" I mean "reduces the risk of developing cancer, or delays the age of disease onset." I realize that I'm preaching to the choir here, so please help me spread cancer awareness (the real kind) and get your friends and family off the couch! Or even better yet, if you hold a position of influence to shape physical education policy in your region, get involved! Hyperthermia therapy Hyperthermia therapy is a type of medical treatment in which body tissue is exposed to slightly higher temperatures to damage and kill cancer cells or to make cancer cells more sensitive to the effects of radiation and certain anti-cancer drugs. Techniques that may bring local tissues to quite high temperatures, such as radio frequency ablation, are not usually what is meant by "hyperthermia."[1] When combined with radiation therapy, it is called thermoradiotherapy. Whole-body hyperthermia has also been found to be helpful for depression.[2] It is also used in the treatment of Lymes disease. Local hyperthermia has shown to be effective when combined with chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancers such as breast, cervical, prostate, head and neck, melanoma, soft-tissue sarcoma and rectal cancer, among others. Whole-body hyperthermia is generally considered to be a promising experimental cancer treatment, but requires close medical monitoring of the patient, as side effects can be serious. Hyperthermia is considered
the "fourth leg" of cancer treatment. It was historically
reserved for the most severe or recurrent cases of cancer. However,
there is more evidence to support its use as a primary treatment,
as is the practice in parts of Europe, including the Netherlands,
Germany, and Austria. Regional hyperthermia is currently becoming
more utilized in the United States and elsewhere, as devices come
to market (e.g. BSD-500, BSD-1000, Celsius42, EHY-2000plus, EHY-3010
ML, EHY-1020 IL, Sonotherm 1000, ThermoChem HT-1000, 8 Medical
Hyperthermia Pump, Beaumont Hyperthermia Pump). Whole body hyperthermia,
using radiant heat chambers (e.g. Iratherm 2000, Enthermics RHS
7500, Aquatherm, Heckel HT 3000) is almost always used as an adjuvant
therapy. The most effective uses are currently being studied.
Circulatory means of achieving hyperthermia have been elusive,
because of adverse events, but there have been several successful
trials. In the United States, Ash used circulatory whole body
hyperthermia to treat AIDS, with several studies culminating in
an efficacy trial in 1997. AIDS work declined with the advent
of modern drug therapy, and this circuit evolved under collaboration
with Zwischenberger and Vertrees and a successful phase I study
of whole body hyperthermia in metastatic lung cancer in 2004.
More recently, Locker published a phase I trial of circulatory
WBH for advanced sarcoma in Austria.
Local (also local-regional) thermotherapy is a non-surgical and particularly gentle treatment method for cancer, and can produce remarkable success, in our experience. The high increase in the temperature in the malignant cell tissue attacks the tissue in numerous ways. As is generally known, cell tissue shows super-increased metabolic activity (for faster cell division); however, the provision for this through the tumour's own capillaries is poor. This contradiction has fatal consequences for the tumour cells where the area is overheated, particularly if it occurs suddenly. Firstly, the cell-damaging heat cannot be conducted away from the location, and only to a limited degree. Secondly, the increase in temperature causes a lack of oxygen and nutrients in this tissue. Both of these factors undermine the tumour's conditions for life. This undersupply then inhibits the metabolic processes and consequently the division of the degenerate cells. The components are damaged by the heat and cannot be sufficiently repaired. These conditions predispose the cells to dying off. Reporters confronted five accused priests in as many countries: Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Peru. One priest who relocated to a poor parish in Peru admitted on camera to molesting a 13-year-old boy while working in the Jackson, Mississippi diocese. Another is currently under investigation in Brazil after allegations arose that he abused disadvantaged children living in an orphanage he founded there. All five were able to continue working as priests, despite criminal investigations or cash payouts to alleged victims. All enjoyed the privilege, respect and unfettered access to young people that comes with being clergy members. In the US, Catholic
leaders have come under intense pressure for concealing priests’
sex crimes, and for transferring perpetrators among parishes rather
than turning them over to law enforcement. The scandal has cost
the church billions of dollars and led to a sharp decline in new
clergy. In response, in 2002 US bishops approved a “zero-tolerance” policy, under which priests who molest children are no longer allowed a second chance to serve in the clergy. Victim advocates say that relocating priests to poorer parishes overseas is the church’s latest strategy for protecting its reputation. “As developed countries find it tougher to keep predator priests on the job, bishops are increasingly moving them to the developing world where there’s less vigorous law enforcement, less independent media and a greater power differential between priests and parishioners,” said David Clohessy, spokesman for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP. “This is massive, and my suspicion is that it’s becoming more and more pronounced.” Reporter Will Carless shows women documents from the lawsuit against admitted child abuser Father Paul Madden outside the small church in Puerto Huarmey, Peru, where Madden had just celebrated mass. The women were not aware of the priest's past before GlobalPost spoke with them. The priests GlobalPost confronted on camera, far from the US and European churches where the sexual abuse allegations occurred, include: Father Carlos Urrutigoity,
accused of sharing beds with and fondling teenage boys in Scranton,
Pennsylvania. The bishop of Scranton called him a “serious
threat to young people,” but in Paraguay, reporters found
him leading Mass in a major church. He had been promoted to second-in-command
of the diocese of Ciudad del Este. Another priest we tracked down, Father Federico Fernandez Baeza, was indicted by a grand jury in 1987 on two second-degree felony charges of indecency with a child. The priests we tracked headed south after sex abuse allegations were made against them in US and European dioceses. A family in San Antonio, Texas accused Fernandez in a civil lawsuit of ritually raping two brothers over a two-year period. Prosecutors dropped the criminal case after the diocese of San Antonio reportedly paid the family more than $1 million. Fernandez flew to Colombia, where he continued a high-profile career in the church. We traced him to the city of Cartagena, where he’s a senior administrator and priest at a Catholic university. After consulting with Fernandez’s office, university guards prohibited us from entering the campus, and Fernandez has not responded to requests for comment. The priests told us they have been allowed to continue preaching unfettered, without facing internal investigations, despite Pope Francis’ pledges to clean up the church. Last year, the pope sent a letter to every bishop in the world, ordering them to follow a global “zero tolerance policy” on child abuse. This year he created a commission tasked specifically with protecting children from church sex abuse. Following repeated phone calls and emails, both the Vatican’s press office and the head of the commission, Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, declined to provide comment for this story. The cases GlobalPost found are exactly what the church and Cardinal O’Malley’s commission need to be focusing on, said Peter Saunders, an advocate for abuse survivors and a lay member of the church’s commission. “Zero tolerance is meaningless unless it applies to the whole institution,” he said. “Arguably, some of the biggest problems are in the less well-off parts of the world, South America, Africa, the Far East. When exposed to the state system of educational therapy, Kristine noticed Jacob would withdraw deeply and refuse to speak with anyone. Even though she found it “terrifying to fly against the advice of the professionals,” she knew in her heart “that if Jake stayed in special ed, he would slip away,” Kristine relates in her memoir, The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing Genius. So began a journey for Jacob that would lead to such unexpected achievement that the whole premise of standardized therapy for this ‘special needs’ child would be blown to bits. A path of passion and discovery After years of frustration and little progress, Kristine made a radical decision in the eyes of the special ed system — she took Jacob out of school and prepared him for kindergarten herself. As described in the New York Daily Times: She let him explore the things he wanted to explore. He studied patterns and shadows and stars. At the same time, she made sure that he enjoyed “normal” childhood pleasures – softball, picnics – along with other kids his age. “I operate under a concept called ‘muchness’,” Kristine said “which is surrounding children with the things they love – be it music, or art, whatever they’re drawn to and love.” By the time Jacob reached the age of 11, he entered college and is currently studying condensed matter physics at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. According to an email Professor Scott Tremaine wrote to Jacob’s family: “The theory that he’s working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics … Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize.” Jacob also has an IQ of 170 — higher than that of Einstein. Als het in financieel zwaar weer verkerende Air France besluit om dochteronderneming KLM van de hand te doen, dan komt KLM er alleen voor te staan. De overheid heeft dan niet het eerste recht om het bedrijf te kopen. Door het niet opnemen van een terugkooprecht heeft de Staat volgens de Utrechtse econoom Hans Schenk de kans laten lopen in het geval van problemen serieuze invloed te krijgen op de toekomst ''van dit publieke belang". In de jaren tachtig
werd een dergelijke terugkoopoptie wel in aandeelhoudersovereenkomsten
met KLM opgenomen. Bij de fusie van KLM met Air France in 2003
heeft de Staat daar afstand van gedaan. Voor de fusie had de Nederlandse overheid nog een belang van 15 procent in KLM. Na ligt het belang in de Nederlandse tak op 6 procent. Het ministerie zegt
tegen de krant dat er inderdaad geen afspraken zijn gemaakt over
het kopen van KLM, maar herkent zich niet in de term 'terugkopen'. In de zomer uitten Kamerleden hun zorgen over de positie van KLM. Er waren twijfels over afspraken die de overheid met het bedrijf had gemaakt over de positie van KLM op Schiphol. Maar staatssecretaris Wilma Mansveld (Infrastructuur) benadrukte dat de positie van KLM op de Nederlandse luchthaven is geborgd. This is a very brief background of someone who is clearly a well respected “academic” in his field. Not long ago, he joined a long and growing list of “academics” who are helping to pull back the curtain that’s been blinding the masses for what seems to be a very long time, even though this subject is still ridiculed by some in the academic world. It was during the Clementine Mission, more specifically, the mapping of the Lunar Surface, that he began to suspect an extraterrestrial presence on the moon. Of all the pictures I’ve seen from the moon that show possible structures, the most impressive is a picture of a miles wide recto-linear structure. This looked unmistakably artificial, and it shouldn’t be there. As somebody in the space defence community, I look on any such structure on the moon with great concern because it isn’t ours, there’s no way we could have built such a thing. It means someone else is up there. (source) He’s also been quoted as saying: We were aware there was a possibility of an unknown presence, possibly alien/extraterrestrial near the Earth … There I am sitting in a room of retired army and airforce generals and a few admirals, and we’re watching what looks like a firefight in space. But an established team of paranormal researchers in Russia called Kosmopoisk are convinced that the rock's resemblance to the shape of a mythical flying saucer mean it must have originated in space. Local reports in Russia said the area where it was found - Medveditskaya Ridge, in Zhirnovsky district, near near Volgograd, Russia, was reknowned for UFO sightings and paranormal activity. Deze medicijnen zijn vaak niet alleen onnodig en ineffectief, ze kunnen de patiënten ook veranderen in verslaafden, veroorzaken bijwerkingen en zijn verantwoordelijk voor duizenden sterfgevallen. Antipsychotica, die worden gegeven aan dementerende patiënten om ze stil te houden, verhogen het risico op hartziekte, diabetes en beroerte. Sommige antidepressiva zijn daarnaast gelinkt aan hartritmestoornissen. Professor Peter Gøtzsche van de Universiteit van Kopenhagen zegt dat psychiatrische medicijnen in Groot-Brittannië doodsoorzaak nummer drie zijn, na hartziekte en kanker. De schade die deze middelen berokkenen wordt volgens hem zwaar onderschat. Helpen niet Het aantal zelfmoorden onder volwassenen en kinderen die antidepressiva nemen ligt bovendien 15 keer hoger dan het aantal dat is berekend door de Amerikaanse geneesmiddelenautoriteit FDA. Ahmed told the Dallas paper that he felt particularly conscious of his Muslim heritage during police questioning, saying they asked him if he “tried to make a bomb,” although he repeatedly explained it was a clock. Two days after Prince announced that he would release his new album HitNRun exclusively to Tidal, the singer revealed the reason he is sidestepping a record label and offering the LP directly through Jay Z's streaming service. "Record contracts are just like — I'm gonna say the word – slavery," Prince said. "I would tell any young artist... don't sign." Speaking to a small group of reporters from the National Association of Black Journalists Saturday at his Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis, Prince expressed concerns over the future of the music business, NPR reports. He also voiced his disapproval about how record labels turn artists into "indentured servitude," since the artists have little control or insight over how labels take their music and profit off it online, a claim David Byrne similarly laid against the major labels. "Once we have our own resources, we can provide what we need for ourselves," Prince said of why he chose to team with Tidal. "Jay Z spent $100 million of his own money to build his own service. We have to show support for artists who are trying to own things for themselves." According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Prince also debuted a pair of tracks from his September 7th-bound HitNRun, reportedly titled "Love Control" and "Shut This Down." Those tracks join the previously released first single "Hardrocklover." Prince also told the Paisley Park crowd that HitNRun would be released physically at some point. In 1993, when Prince and Warner Bros. were warring over his record contract, the rocker frequently appeared in public and onstage with "slave" scrawled on his cheek. Leden die zichzelf tienduizenden euro's diep in de schulden steken. Prominent ex-scientoloog Marty Rathbun kijkt er niet meer van op. De verhalen die uittreders van de Nederlandse Scientology Kerk donderdag en afgelopen weekend in Trouw vertelden over de organisatie, klinken hem maar al te bekend in de oren. Ze zijn de nagel aan Scientology's doodskist, zegt hij. Voordat Rathbun de Scientology Kerk in 2004 verliet, was hij twee decennia lang de rechterhand van internationaal kerkleider David Miscavige. Nu probeert hij de buitenwereld te vertellen over de vermeende misstanden in de kerk en de Amerikaanse kerktop. Over de strafcentra waar uit de gratie gevallen personeel wordt 'gerehabiliteerd', bijvoorbeeld. Zelf bracht Rathbun naar eigen zeggen vier dagen door in een strafhok voor hoge kerkfunctionarissen. Volgens meerdere ex-bewoners van dat strafhok kwam Miscavige af en toe op bezoek om klappen uit te delen. Het strafhok was lang niet de eerste keer dat de kerk over de schreef ging, zegt Rathbun. Hij moest naar eigen zeggen al zijn vertrouwelijke therapiesessies met acteur Tom Cruise heimelijk op video vastleggen. Ook zou hem zijn opgedragen om actrice Nicole Kidman af te luisteren. 'Ze willen dat ik door
het lint ga' Rathbun weet het heel zeker: zij zijn op pad gestuurd door Miscavige. "Ze willen me zozeer opfokken dat ik door het lint ga", zegt hij. "Dan kunnen ze aangifte doen van mishandeling." Dat plan lukte: op een van haar websites laat de kerk nu zien dat Rathbun zijn stem verheft en het groepje nat spuit met een tuinslang. Jarenlang kon de kerk wegkomen met haar agressieve gedrag, meent hij. "Maar dankzij internet komt daar nu verandering in. Als je googelt op 'scientology' kom je direct uit op allerlei pagina's die vertellen over misstanden. De kerk verbiedt scientologen om dat te doen, maar zo'n gevecht kun je natuurlijk niet winnen." De kerk claimt al jaren dat ze miljoenen aanhangers heeft en groeit als kool. "Scientology is nu volwassen', jubelde Miscavige ruim een jaar geleden tijdens een groot evenement. "En onze voetafdruk is enorm." De nieuwe gebouwen die ze in de daaropvolgende twaalf maanden zou openen, zou die voetafdruk 'alleen maar doen groeien'. Miscavige: "Nog nooit was Scientology zo goed geolied, zo capabel om wezens op te stuwen naar hogere sferen." Onzin, zegt Rathbun. De kerk groeit helemaal niet. Sterker nog: ze krimpt. Hij en andere uittreders, zoals Scientology's voormalige pr-man Mike Rinder, schatten het wereldwijde aantal scientologen op maximaal 30 duizend. In het internationale ledenbestand staan volgens hen zo'n 30 duizend namen. Rathbun: "Miscavige kent die cijfers. Hij weet dat een groot deel van Scientology's gebouwen leeg of bijna leeg is. Maar of het echt binnenkomt? Hij blíjft verkondigen dat de kerk explosief groeit." Volgens de ex-scientologen die Trouw sprak is ook de Nederlandse tak al jaren aan het krimpen. Ze schatten diens huidige ledental op 100 tot 200 man. De Nederlandse woordvoerder wilde daar niet op reageren. Rathbun verwacht dat de kerk het de komende decennia moet hebben van haar huidige aanhangers en hun kinderen. "Er komen geen nieuwe leden meer bij. Mensen kijken wel uit." Scientology zou haar imago kunnen oppoetsen, zegt hij. "Maar met Miscavige aan het roer gaat dat niet gebeuren. Hij en de rest van de kerktop zijn er heilig van overtuigd dat ze handelen in de geest van L. Ron Hubbard (de oprichter van de kerk, red). Aan de top leeft sterk het gevoel dat de kerk van alle kanten wordt aangevallen. Ze zien niet dat ze zelf de agressors zijn." 'Miscavige gelooft:
de aarde gaat spoedig verloren' "Ik weet nog goed dat hij op een ochtend de bestuurszaal binnenkwam en zei: 'Jongens, ik ben nog eens door Hubbards persoonlijke documenten gegaan. Hij heeft opgeschreven hoe lang deze planeet nog zal bestaan. En het is een stuk korter dan jullie denken.'" Rathbun weet niet welk apocalyptisch schouwspel Miscavige precies verwacht. "Hij heeft me verteld dat hij hoopt de aarde te ontvluchten als deze planeet ophoudt te bestaan. Dat zal maar een paar mensen lukken. Hij gelooft duidelijk dat er heel veel op het spel staat. Waarom richt hij anders van die strafcentra op?" Afgelopen dagen publiceerde Trouw een tweeluik over de Nederlandse tak van Scientology. Lees hier deel 1 en deel 2 terug. het algemene belang? De Nederlandse tak is ook verwikkeld in een juridische procedure, maar die draait om een fiscale kwestie. De kerk vindt dat ze recht heeft op een anbi-status: een fiscale erkenning dat haar activiteiten een 'algemeen belang' dienen. Als een organisatie zo'n status heeft, mogen donateurs hun giften aftrekken van de inkomstenbelasting. De fiscus vindt echter dat Scientology met haar cursus- en therapieverkoop zo commercieel opereert dat ze vooral haar eigen belang dient. Volgens de kerk begrijpt de fiscus het helemaal verkeerd: ze verkóópt haar cursussen en therapiesessies niet, ze vraagt er slechts (minimum)donaties voor. "Dat woord 'donatie' gebruikt ze heel bewust", zegt Rathbun. "Het geeft de indruk dat allemaal niet zo commercieel is. Onzin. Van vrijblijvendheid is geen sprake. Ik ken maar één scientoloog die niets hoefde te betalen voor cursussen en auditing: Tom Cruise." Het Gerechtshof in Den Haag doet binnenkort uitspraak over de belastingkwestie.
